Game description of You Had One Job
Give each player a name tag, shuffle the deck of task cards, and deal one card to each player. The players must place their task card in their name tag and hook it to their clothing so that all players can see the tasks of their new colleagues.
All colleagues take turns making a gesture and a sound that matches their task card. For example, if the task is "Pick up the phone," the player can pretend to pick up the phone, press a key, and raise the phone to their ear, and say "Ring, ring… hello?" use as sound. Everyone can come up with their own gesture and sound. The crazier, the more fun!
Place the additional task cards and the performance review cards face up in the center of the playing area.
The oldest player may start as the first colleague. If he or she makes a miss (we'll come back to that), it's the next player's turn. The game is played against the clock.
All colleagues start the game by drumming their palms on the table in a steady rhythm. Start the beat by tapping the table about every two seconds, it's self-explanatory! Keep the beat going throughout the round. As the game progresses, the rhythm should be steadily accelerated to reflect the increasingly rapid pace at which your boss expects you to work the longer you are employed.
The first colleague starts the round by performing his task (the gesture and sound chosen at the beginning of the round) and must then immediately carry out the task of another colleague (by making that player's gesture and sound).
Colleagues continue to pass responsibilities to each other while maintaining the beat, until someone makes a mistake.
Examples of misses:
- Not responding immediately when your task is being performed
- Not performing a task (gesture and sound) correctly
- Waiting too long between performing your own task and that of a colleague
- Performing a task that is no longer part of the game
If a colleague makes a miss, the round ends. Anyone who notices a miss should stop drumming on the table and shouting 'You're fired!' call. Show no mercy as you climb the corporate ladder: if your colleague reacts even a few seconds too slowly, that counts as a miss!
The colleague who made a mistake must draw a performance appraisal card and read aloud and perform the task indicated on the card. If a colleague draws a different task card, the player must replace the card in their ID badge with it and immediately choose a new gesture and sound based on the new card. This colleague starts the next round.
A player who has made three misses (cards indicated with an X) is dismissed.
With 3 players or 2 the game becomes more difficult. All colleagues must turn their name tags over so that their task is no longer visible.
The colleague who is the only one left wins the game.
